Finally, Make Peace with your Body!
What is body image dissatisfaction? In many cases, eating disorders can go hand-in-hand with body image dissatisfaction. This is a phenomenon that causes us to generally feel unhappy with our bodies and define our individual self-worth by our perceived looks. In these circumstances, it’s necessary to identify and work through the underlying, often distorted thoughts and feelings we have about our body in order to heal.
We live in a world where toxic diet culture, society’s unrealistic beauty standards, traditional media and negative social media images and messaging constantly tell us our bodies are not good enough, we’re not thin enough, we’re not curvy enough, we’re not beautiful or desirable.
The Mindfulness Space was created to help clients discover and heal from the pain we experience related to our body, that’s caused by society’s toxic messaging through learning compassion, self-acceptance and developing the tools needed to counteract this toxic messaging from within!
Common Clinical Disorders that May Stem from Body Image Dissatisfaction Include:
Body Dysmorphic Disorder is the preoccupation with one or more perceived defects or flaws in physical appearance that are not observable, or appear slight to others. Body Dysmorphic Disorder can include performing repetitive behaviors such as mirror checking, excessive grooming, skin picking, reassurance seeking, or frequently comparing one’s appearance with the appearance of others.
Major Depressive Disorder is very common in individuals who suffer from poor body image or with Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Depressive symptoms often appear secondary to the distress and impairment that Body Dysmorphic Disorder causes.
Anxiety Disorders, such as Social Anxiety and avoidance are common in individuals who struggle with perceived poor body image or with Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Individuals with Body Dysmorphic Disorder may also experience health related anxiety.
